Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Months following reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
